A Clinical Analysis of Geriatric Anesthesia



Abstract
Today, medical and social progress has increased the expectancy of life. This has increased the number of aged and high-risk patients who require major surgical procedure for the -correction or palliation of their disease process.
We have analyzed 1074 cases of patients aged over 60 years who were administered anesthesia from January 1973 to December 1982 according to age, sex, department preoperative .condition, technique of anesthesia and anesthetics.
The results were as follows:
1) The percentage of geriatric cases were 5.7% in average which ranged- between 4.0% and 7.9%.
2) There were 566. male(52.7%) and 508 female(47.3%) cases.
3) In the surgical group 583 cases (54.3%) were general surgery, 256 cases (23.8%) orthopedic surgery, 100 cases(9.3%) urology, 59 cases(5. 5%) neurosurgery and 49 cases(4.6%) gynecology respectively.
4) In the classification of physical status, 119 cases (11.1 %) were class 1, 431 cases (40.1 %) class 2, 101 cases(9.4%) class 3,. 6 cases(0.6%) class 4, 42 cases(3.9%) class l E, 246.¢¥ cases. (22.9%) class 2 E, 114 cases(10.6%) class 3 E and -15 cases(1.4%) class 4E.
5) Emergency cases were 417 cases (38..8%) and elective operation were 657 cases (61.2%).
6) The technique of anesthesia were 612 cases (57. 0%) of general anesthesia, 255`cases(23. 8%) of spinal anesthesia, 97 cases(9.0%) of epidural anesthesia, and 110 , cases (10.2%) of others.
7) The major anesthetics was halothane, 430 cases (40.0%), in general anesthesia and tetracaine, 253 cases (23.5%), in spinal anesthesia.
